ARYABHATA:
“USA, Aug 8 (VNN) By Shashi Tharoor, United Nations Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information.
IN an earlier column I wrote of how the roots of Indian science and technology go far deeper than Nehru. I cited a remarkable new book, Lost Discoveries, by the American writer Dick Teresi, which studies the ancient non-Western foundations of modern science. While Teresi ranges from the Babylonians and Mayans to Egyptians and other Africans, it is his references to India that won me. Where my previous piece focused on ancient India’s remarkable breakthroughs in mathematics, in this column I’d like to cover the other sciences in which our ancestors excelled.
For a nation still obsessed by astrology, it is ironic that Indians established the field of planetary astronomy, identifying the relative distance of the known planets from the sun, and figured out that the moon was nearer to the earth than the sun. A hymn of the Rig- Veda extols “nakshatra-vidya”; the Vedas’ awareness of the importance of the sun and the stars is manifest in several places. The Siddhantas are amongst the world’s earliest texts on astronomy and mathematics; the Surya Siddhanta, written about 400 A.D., includes a method for finding the times of planetary ascensions and eclipses. The notion of gravitation, or gurutvakarshan, is found in these early texts. ‘Two hundred years before Pythagoras,’ writes Teresi, ‘philosophers in northern India had understood that gravitation held the solar system together, and that therefore the sun, the most massive object, had to be at its centre.’
The Kerala-born genius Aryabhata was the first human being to explain, in 499 A.D., that the daily rotation of the earth on its axis is what accounted for the daily rising and setting of the sun. (His ideas were so far in advance of his time that many later editors of his awe-inspiring “Aryabhatiya” altered the text to save his reputation from what they thought were serious errors.) Aryabhata conceived of the elliptical orbits of the planets a thousand years before Kepler, in the West, came to the same conclusion (having assumed, like all Europeans, that planetary orbits were circular rather than elliptical). He even estimated the value of the year at 365 days, six hours, 12 minutes and 30 seconds; in this he was only a few minutes off (the correct figure is just under 365 days and six hours). The translation of the Aryabhatiya into Latin in the 13th Century taught Europeans a great deal; it also revealed to them that an Indian had known things that Europe would only learn of a millennium later.
If Aryabhata was a giant of world science, his successors as the great Indian astronomers, Varamahira and Brahmagupta, have left behind vitally important texts that space does not allow me to summarise here. The mathematical excellence of Indian science, which I described in a recent column, sparkles through their work; Indian astronomers advanced their field by calculations rather than deductions from nature. Teresi says that ‘Indian astronomy, perhaps more than any other, has served as the crossroads and catalyst between the past and the future of the science.’ Inevitably, Indian cosmology was also in advance of the rest of the world. By the Fifth Century A.D. Indians became the first to estimate the age of the earth at more than four billion years. Teresi’s book has a fascinating section relating Hindu creation myths to modern cosmology; he discusses the notion of great intermeshing cycles of creation and destruction and draws stimulating parallels with the “big bang” theory that currently commands the field.
The ancient Indians were no slouches in chemistry, which emerges in several verses of the Atharva Veda, composed around 1000 B.C. Two thousand years later, Indian practical chemistry was still more advanced than Europe’s. The historian Will Durant wrote that the Vedic Indians were ‘ahead of Europe in industrial chemistry; they were masters of calcination, distillation, sublimation, steaming, fixation, the production of light without heat, the mixing of anaesthetic and soporific powders, and the preparation of metallic salts, compounds and alloys.’ An Indian researcher, Udayana, studied gases by filling bladders and balloons with smoke, air and assorted gases. The ancient Jain thinkers predicted the notion of opposite electrical charges and advanced a notion of the “spin” of particles which would not be discovered by the West till the 20th Century.
So what about physics? Indian metaphysicists came upon the idea of atoms centuries before the Greek Democritus, known in the West as the father of particle physics. In 600 B.C. Kanada established a theory of atoms in his Vaisesika-sutra; the Jains went further in later years, expounding a concept of elementary particles. Indians also came closer to quantum physics and other current theories than anyone else in the ancient world.
The Upanishadic concepts of svabhava the inherent nature of material objects and yadrchha (the randomness of causality) are startlingly modern. The Upanishads developed the first classifications of matter, evolving into an awareness of the five elements and later of the five senses. When the Samkhya philosophers explained, in the Sixth Century B.C., that “the material universe emanates out of prakriti, the rootless root of the universe,” they anticipate Aristotle. And when Indian philosophers spoke of maya, or that which gives illusory weight to the universe, they did so in terms that evoke the 20th Century idea of the Higgs field, the all-pervasive invisible field so beloved of particle physicists, which gives substance to illusion.
Which brings us back to technology. Did India have any technology of its own before the IITs? The answer is an emphatic yes. I have already mentioned last time the extraordinary achievements of the Harappan civilization, which included terra cotta ceramics fired at high temperatures, a sophisticated system of weights and measures, and sanitary engineering skills in advance of the West of the 19th Century. Our skill at digging up, cutting and polishing diamonds goes back millennia. In the Sixth Century A.D. India made the highest-quality sword steel in the world. Iron suspension bridges came from Kashmir; printing and papermaking were known in India before anywhere in the West; Europeans sought Indian shipbuilding expertise; our textiles were rated the best in the world till well into the colonial era. But we were never very good with machinery; we made our greatest products with skilled labour. That was, in the end, how the British defeated us.
Shashi Tharoor is the United Nations Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information.” (3- From Hindunet.com)
Clearly this man and his predecessors did not believe in a Flat Earth. We are lead to believe various Europeans like Copernicus or Galileo discovered these things too. It is a sad state of affairs which sees propaganda invade science for the purpose of ego and bigoted war-mongering and colonialism.

Your friend just joined an MLM or Network Marketing business and is asking if you’d like to make some extra money? You trust her and everything sounds great. But do you really know if this is the right business for you?
Many times people get started in MLMs or network marketing because of a friend or family member’s recommendation. That can be a wonderful introduction to excellent products and services. But if you’re looking to make some serious money, and especially if you’re new to this industry, do your homework before joining. If you are already with an MLM and you’re not having the success you want, don’t blame the industry. You may not have found the right company for you. Search for people that really know the answers to these questions, and then make your decision.
1. How long has the company been in business? If it is a brand new start-up, there may be huge potential, but there can also be huge risk. If the company is new, talk to people at the headquarters to learn more about the management team and their history. Companies who have been in business a few years have track records to help you gauge how stable they are. You don’t want to represent a company that folds in a few years.
2. How do people earn money with that business? Is it through recruiting, retailing or a combination of methods? The more options you have to earn money, the better your chances are of finding something that you enjoy doing. And if you recruit others, they have those options also.
3. Do you like the product or service the company offers? Many times people join an MLM for business and financial reasons. But if you don’t like the product or service you are representing, you won’t go very far. To be successful, you need to be a product of your product. Your belief, or lack thereof, will speak much louder than any words.
4. How much money does it really take to get started? There are a variety of programs available and many have very low start-up costs, but find out if there are additional costs once you join. Choose a business that works within your budget. But remember, anything with real income potential takes some initial investment. If you have nothing to invest right now, start saving today. A home business is one of the best tax strategies you can have.
5. Is there true residual income? If you are looking for significant, long-term income, this is a critically important question to ask. For most MLMs when you build a team, or an organization of other people who buy products or services from the company, you get a commission on their purchases. True residual income means that if you decide to stop working that business at some future point, you would still continue to receive commissions from the company on purchases of your team members. Companies vary widely though on whether they will still pay you commissions if you stop working. Some have quotas or growth requirements that need to be met to get your check. If you are serious about long-term income, you cannot afford to gloss over this topic.
6. Will you get the help and support you need? Most people need support from an experienced, successful person for coaching and mentoring. “Sponsor shopping” is very common. Interview the person to find out if you connect with him/her. And if you partner with a friend or family member who’s new to the business also, make sure there’s an experienced member of your support team available to help.
Have you ever said “I don’t like (or want) to sell?” You’re not alone. Most people dislike “selling” because we remember buying something we didn’t really want because we felt pressured. Not a pleasant memory! This industry has grown so much. Good mentors show you how to listen to people and offer solutions. So, the final guideline is…
7. Trust your instincts. If you have some fear and uncertainties, that’s normal. But if you feel pressured to join or to buy, run the other way. Successful network marketing is about honestly helping others. And when you find the right company and product, it is a wonderful vehicle where ordinary people can truly earn extraordinary incomes.
You deserve success and happiness.
Don’t let anyone or anything steal that. Blessings…

In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 10 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 7 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 10 percent offered by competitors will change.
While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 11 percent. Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.
To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust? Buy a new house with geld lenen met negatieve bkr notering, 117341 euro in one day.
Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 9 percent. Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin. It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.
A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 11 percent. Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. See which lenders are charging fees 11 percent and for how much. Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.
Although most mortgage experts say that rates 9 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 9 percentage. Different lenders charge different fees.

Divorce does have some effects on social security benefits. The basics are quite simple. If you are entitled to receive social security benefits based upon your own earnings record, you will, of course, be able to collect social security after divorce based on that earnings record. However, if you were married for ten or more years, you might be able to collect social security benefits under your spouse’s record after you are divorce. There are a few qualifications that you must deal with.
The first issue to be addressed is the amount of time that you were married before the divorce. To collect social security benefits based upon your former spouse’s earnings record, you must have been married for at least ten years. If you or your spouse are considering divorce, this ten year time limit might be an important issue. For example, if you have been married for just nine years, and if having this social security benefit after divorce will help you, you might want to negotiate a one year separation before the divorce. That way, you have preserved your ability to collect social security under your soon to be ex spouse’s earnings record after the divorce. The one year separation could have some impact upon other rights that you need to address. So, it is a good idea to discuss this issue with your divorce attorney or with an accountant before finalizing a separation or divorce agreement.
You cannot collect social security under an ex spouse’s earnings record if you remarry. So, if you have carefully preserved this benefit after divorce, you might want to be very careful about remarrying. You can collect social security benefits under the next spouse’s earnings record, but the same time rule will apply. That is, you must remain married to that individual for ten years before you can collect social security under their earnings record.
Many people simply want to know how much they will collect in social security benefits. The general rule when collecting benefits under someone else’s earnings record is that you cannot collect more than fifty percent of that person’s benefit. So, if your spouse or ex spouse is going to receive a monthly benefit of $1500, you cannot collect more than $750 if you collect under their earnings record. You need to know what your own benefit will be to decide if you would be better off collecting under your own earnings record or under a spouse or former spouse’s earnings record after divorce.
The rules that pertain to collecting social security after divorce are different than the rules that pertain to collecting social security after the death of a spouse to whom you are still married. THose rules should not be confused.
You can always check with the social security administration to find out what your social security rights and benefits are. The social security administration also maintains a website that you can interact with to figure out your rights and benefits.

If there are any parents reading this who are thinking of taking their under-10 year olds to see the PG rated Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, please read the following from a ScreenIt.com review:
Rated PG, the film contains a handful of mild expletives; some non-explicit, but sexually related dialogue; one teen who sexually pursues her soccer coach nonstop until he finally can’t resist anymore and they apparently have sex (off-camera, after some making out, and she feels empty afterwards)…
I have not read the books this movie is based on, nor am I likely to see the film (I’m not the target audience), but I did read in an interview with the author of the book series (Ann Brashares) that she made an effort to allude to any sexual issues in the books in the most oblique way possible.
It doesn’t sound like it will be all that subtle in the movie version, which would be fine if it was rated PG-13 (The target audience for these books is 13-16 year old girls).
Gone are the days when you could just assume that a PG-rated movie is OK without doing any further research. I really believe that at some point parents will have to screen even G-rated movies before taking their kids to see them.
And whose fault is this? No, I don’t just lay the blame at the foot of the studios, but it rests with the film ratings board. From FilmRatings.com:
Who gives movies their ratings?
Parents give the movies their ratings-men and women just like you. They are part of a specially designed committee called the film rating board of the Classification and Rating Administration. As a group they view each film and, after a group discussion, vote on its rating, making an educated estimate as to which rating most American parents would consider the most appropriate.
Ok, fine. Sounds good so far… although I still don’t understand how the envelope continues to be pushed first on PG-13 films, and now apparently on PG films as well.
After further investigation:
The ratings are decided by a full-time Rating Board located in Los Angeles. There are 8-13 members of the Board who serve for periods of varying length.
Oh! Now it all makes sense! With apologies to parents in the state of California who are trying to raise their kids right, could the MPAA find a location from which to select a group of parents that could be less in touch with the rest of the country?
I suppose they could have assembled a group from the San Francisco Bay area…
Here’s a suggestion: How about a group assembled from parents across the country? Figure out a way to do it… just send out screeners and then do a conference call. IMO that would get you a more representative cross section of parents countrywide.
Something needs to be changed, because the ratings system is obviously not working any more.
